Light scattering in fog

If you see the light of the sun through light fog, you often think that you can see the sunrays. But sometimes it is also possible to observe the shadows of things projecting up into the sky against the light. The reason for both phenomena is the same: the scattering of light by fog droplets. The latter phenomenon can be observed when you are in the shadow of a thing yourself (for example a tower or a mast), where no sunlight hits the fog. If you look above the thing, the incidence and also the scattering of light is less than outside the shadow. So you see the shadow projecting above the thing. Our observers in Romania succeeded in making a very nice observation of this phenomenon in the shadow of a pylon.
